Deconstructing Flight

Deconstructing Flight was inspired by the work and laboratories of the 19th century French physiologist Étienne Jules Marey.

Marey was interested in the ways that birds used their wings during flight. He devised stop-motion cameras to analyze the sequence of motion during each wingbeat. He also suspended birds in elaborate harnesses that were hooked up to an apparatus that graphed the pressure exerted by a bird's wing muscles during flight.
