During the early years of the Wisconsin Academy, several Academy members were involved in geographical and geological surveys of Wisconsin. Thomas Chamberlin directed one of these surveys, lasting from 1873 to 1882.

This image shows detailed field notebooks with maps and specimen descriptions made by Roland Duer Irving and Charles Van Hise during their work on the Chamberlin Survey. The notebooks and specimens are from the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey collection.
