Increase A. Lapham did research and collecting in several areas of natural science, including geology and botany. Lapham was also an accomplished cartographer and surveyor. Lapham mapped as many of Wisconsin's Native American effigy mounds as he could find in the 1840s, concerned about their ongoing destruction. His acclaimed book about the effigy mounds, Antiquities of Wisconsin, was published in 1855 under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution.

This table shows part of the Trenton meteorite, which was studied by Lapham, along with his microscope and attachments.
