Martha Glowacki's Natural History, Observations and Reflections

dimensions variable
2017
mixed media

Throughout my career as an artist, I have done research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's department of Special Collections, which has extraordinary holdings in the history of science. Martha Glowacki’s Natural History is an homage to this collection of rare books.

The exhibition is divided into four sections, reflecting four areas that are of particular interest to me in the history of natural history:

  • Cabinets of curiosities and collections
  • The physics of botany
  • Early motion photography
  • Optics and optical illusions

Martha Glowacki’s Natural History was accompanied by a corollary exhibition of rare books at UW's Memorial Library, showcasing examples of books about the four subjects examined in my show.
