The Psychology of Plants is based on ideas found in the book Man A Plant, written in 1748 by the French philosopher Julien Offray de La Mettrie. In Man A Plant, he compares plants to humans and humans to machines.

The Psychology of Plants is composed of four enclosed, framed sections, each containing a plant placed near an etched passage from La Mettrie's text.
